Situation

Pendry, a Montage brand, entered Park City’s competitive, resort-rich market with a new, ground-up destination at Canyons Village. The vision centered on a modern mountain hotel with outdoor spaces that feel quintessentially Utah. The high-alpine climate necessitated integrated snow management design, flexible spaces for year-round functionality, and easy access to surrounding ski resorts, restaurants, and businesses, all of which set clear goals for the concept and development of the property.

Solution

Building on SB Architects’ overarching vision, Rob Moffat and his team helped develop a landscape architecture and plaza strategy themed “Heart of the Canyon.” Between buildings exist canyon-esque passages, gathering areas, and snow-melt paving zones that use a circulating warming system to keep walkways safe and active. Fire features and outdoor lounges provide the perfect post-ski kick back. Patios extend restaurants into the square while open spaces double as event grounds, positioning the entire resort to absorb the beauty of every season the Wasatch Mountains offer. Pathways and view corridors were tuned to connect seamlessly into the existing network so guests, owners, and day visitors move naturally between village and hotel.

Transformation

The hotel offers a true four-season experience, a destination guests seek out, not merely pass through. By expressing local geology in form and palette and embracing a modern mountain language, the spaces feel authentically Park City while serving the brand’s demographic. The result is a flexible, revenue-savvy plaza atmosphere which energizes food and beverage, supports year-round events, and amplifies the broader district.
